DePaul: Thank God It's Thursday

Schedule changes will give students longer weekend

DePaul University's 2009 Autumn Quarter will look a little different from past calendars. A new schedule of classes will give many students a longer weekend.

Nearly all courses on the Lincoln Park campus will be on a new schedule, with classes that meet just twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays, eliminating the old Friday classes.

"We have met the limit of our capacity on this campus," Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences Charles Suchar told The DePaulia. "We have been on the same scheduling for 40 years. In order to make the best use of our classrooms we had to make some changes."

To make up for the one less weekly class, sessions now begin earlier (8:00 a.m.) and end later (5:50 p.m.).

"We have a lot of students who work either full time or close to that, and we think that this new schedule will offer them much more flexibility than in the past," said Suchar.

Students who take classes on both the Lincoln Park and Loop campuses will likely find scheduling a bit easier, without having to rush from one part of the city to another.

And while more Friday 3-hour classes and Saturday sessions are now being offered, many students are looking forward to a three-day weekend.

"I never want to take a Friday class again," said undergraduate Courtney Carlstrom.

Matt Bartosik, editor of Off the Rocks' next issue and "between blogs" blogger, sometimes wishes he could go back to college and find a message in dry-erase pen on the door.
