Fifty-four Chicago Transit Authority employees will lose their jobs to help cut the 2011 budget.
The cuts include 26 manager-level jobs and will save about $7.6 million, the CTA announced Monday. Combined with reducing expenses, the move will save $15 million annually, the CTA President Forrest Claypool said in a statement.
“The CTA faces severe financial challenges and cannot wait for next year’s budget to begin making cuts,” Claypool said. “By reorganizing and streamlining, we gain immediate savings with no adverse effect on the current level and quality of service provided to customers.”
The reduction in personnel accounts for 10 percent of the senior management. None of the positions eliminated are safety related or will directly impact service, Claypool said.
Other cost-cutting measures include delaying hiring for open positions and reducing materials, utilities and contractual service expenses.
