ComEd Says 2011 Sets Record for Outages

Nearly 200 employees are working 16-hour shifts in the utility’s nerve center, manning phones, watching maps and looking for solutions.

The reports come in almost weekly.

Some version of: storm knocks out power to thousands of Chicagoans and suburban residents hits the airwaves.

The aftermath is never pretty, as Commonwealth Edison crews work to restore electricity to those in the dark.

Some go days without air conditioning, refridgeration, sump pumps in their basement and other modern accoutrements. 

If it seems like this year is a particularly bad one for ComEd, it is. Officials from the agency say this summer's 1.6 million outages is the most they've ever had.
