More than a thousand animals were adopted in the Chicago area on Saturday’s nationwide initiative known as "Clear The Shelters."

Since the start of the 2018 campaign, about 3,300 animals in the Chicagoland area have found new homes at the participating shelters. On Saturday alone, more than 1,150 adoptions took place.

In just a matter of a couple of hours, the count was at approximately 142 and by 2:30 p.m. the number increased to about 259 adoptions.

Thirty minutes later, the number rose to about 381 across all local shelters.

At 6 p.m. the count was at a total of about 804 adoptions and by the end of the day, the number recorded surpassed a thousand.

NBC 5 and Telemundo Chicago teamed up with animal shelters to waive adoption fees across the Chicago area and help pets 6 months and older find forever homes. The major pet adoption event was scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Every year, approximately 6.5 million pets enter animal shelters across the U.S, and about 1.5 million of those animals are euthanized because they haven't been adopted, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Although the event is over, it is never too late to adopt.
