Wolves Wednesday: Outdoor Practice Highlights Light Week

The Chicago Blackhawks have played lots of outdoor hockey games the last few years and they will again next January at Notre Dame Stadium. But you don’t have to wait until then to see hockey players enjoying nature. Mike Berman reports.

Welcome to Wolves Wednesday, our weekly look at the latest happenings with the Chicago Wolves.

Wolves Take Things Outdoors for Practice

The elements prevented Wolves head coach Rocky Thompson from running a normal practice, but that didn’t stop players from enjoying themselves as they hit the outdoor rink in Rosemont on Sunday.

“It’s fun to come out and do it on a special occasion like this, and to be able to mingle and interact with our fans was awesome,” he said.

In addition to the outdoor practice, the Wolves invited kids from the community to come skate with them after the workout was over.

“I’ve been to many games, but I never knew how tall they could be,” one of the youngsters said. ‘I’ve been on the glass, but it’s really, really cool.”

Some of the players even had to don sunglasses to cut down on the glare, and although some of his teammates mocked him, winger Brett Sterling stood by his decision.

“Guys were making fun of me a little bit, but they were definitely necessary,” he said. “The glare from the sun was pretty bad for a while.”

Wild Prove to be Too Much for Wolves to Tame

The Wolves only played one game over the last week, falling 4-1 to the Iowa Wild in a tough road tilt on Friday.

Forward Bryce Gervais scored the lone goal of the game for the Wolves, but it wasn’t enough as Niklas Svedberg made 29 saves and Sam Anas scored a pair of goals to lead the Wild to the victory.

The loss left the Wolves four points behind the Wild in the Central Division standings, and 15 points behind the Manitoba Moose. Fortunately for the Wolves, they do have two games in hand on both teams, meaning that they could potentially make some progress forward in the coming weeks.

What’s Ahead:

The Wolves will have three straight home games at Allstate Arena to look forward to in the next seven days, as they take on the Cleveland Monsters on Thursday and Sunday, and then the San Antonio Rampage on Saturday.

They’ll want to rack up some points in those games, because a tough road trip, including two games against the first-place Moose, loom on the schedule for the final week of February.
