Chicago Teen Fatally Shot Days Before College Orientation

Teen killed in drive-by after leaving store on Chicago's South Side, police said

Students at Johnson Prep College are mourning the loss of a high school graduate. School officials say he was just days from going to his college orientation. NBC 5’s Mary Ann Ahern tells us the spike in violence is now putting pressure on city and state leaders to come up with answers.

A teen boy was shot and killed late Tuesday on Chicago's South Side, days before he was supposed to participate in his college orientation, people close to the boy said.

Marcel Pearson, 17, was leaving a store with a 15-year-old boy and walking through Robichaux Park in the 9200 block of South Eggleston Avenue at 10:07 p.m. when a white minivan pulled up and someone got out and fired at them, police said.

Pearson was shot in the chest and back and was pronounced dead at the scene, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.

The 15-year-old was shot in the leg and taken to Roseland Community Hospital in good condition, police said.

Pearson counselors at Johnson College Prep consoled students as they openly cried Wednesday about the loss of the teen.

The assistant principal at the school said Pearson, a well-known and well-loved student, was "days away from college orientation."

Pearson played basketball, school officials said, and students looked up to him. He had attended Johnson since 9th grade.
