CMB Issues Apology

Carol Mosely Braun issued an apology today to candidate Patricia Van-Pelt Watkins.

"I meant no disrespect," Moseley Braun said during an afternoon press conference some 48 hours after suggesting that Watkins was addicted to crack cocaine.

"I want to apologize to her, to the congregations and members of Trinity United Church and of New Pilgrim Missionary Baptist church and all of the families and friends of those who are or who have been caught up in the tragedy of drug use. I meant no disrespect of the sanctuaries in which campaign tensions spilled over."

Braun said she knows the pain of addicted people. She said her brother struggled with addiction for a number of years.

Tuesday's mea culpa comes one day after Braun defended her comments.

A representative with Watkins' campaign told NBC Chicago that Braun had not called Watkins personally and that the apology was given through the media.
