Hundreds March to Protest Police Violence

The demonstrators protested the "police militarization" and "denied justice" they say have claimed the lives of too many people of color

The march around Chicago’s South Side followed an organized rally outside Chicago Police Department headquarters. NBC Chicago’s Natalie Martinez reports.

A large group of demonstrators marched southbound on South Cottage Grove Avenue on Tuesday night following a rally outside Chicago Police Department headquarters that was billed as a show of "solidarity" with the demonstrations in Baltimore.

"Who do you serve? Who do you protect?" the group shouted as they passed East Pershing Road in the city's Bronzeville neighborhood.

At least one arrest was observed by NBC Chicago crews at the scene.

A number of speeches were made by various groups that came together for the event at CPD headquarters, at East 35th Street and South Michigan Avenue. A Facebook page promoting the event said "too many names have been turned into hashtags," as #Chi2Baltimore was used on social media.

The demonstrators protested the "police militarization" and "denied justice" they say have claimed the lives of too many people of color.

"We do this for Rekia Boyd, Freddie Gray, Dominique Franklin, Mya Hall, a trans woman who was killed by Baltimore police March 30," the organizers said on Facebook. "We do this to have symmetry in the cemetery. To value every life taken."

Earlier in the day, police Supt. Garry McCarthy announced he would embark on listening tours in various Chicago neighborhoods. He said the tours were planned before current unrest in Baltimore.
