Crews are still searching for 20-year Victor Martinez, who jumped into Montrose Harbor early Monday morning. Martinez was trying to save his friend who jumped in, but could not swim. She was rescued and is now in critical condition, but Martinez is still missing. NBC 5’s Christian Farr reports.
A woman in her 20s was in critical condition early Monday morning after being pulled from the cold water of Lake Michigan, and a man she was with says another friend was still in the water.
First responders were called to Montrose Harbor, on the 500 block of West Montrose Avenue, shortly after 2 a.m.
Crews quickly pulled the woman from the lake and transported her to Weiss Memorial Hospital, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. The water temperature on Monday morning was in the low 30s.
A man who did not want to be publicly identified told NBC Chicago he was with a group of people who were drinking in a car in the harbor's parking lot. At some point, the woman said she was going to jump into the water. The man said it was immediately clear the woman was struggling in the water and another man jumped in to rescue her.
"As soon as I see him flip-flop, I came over here ... to call the cops and there was another truck right next to us so I told them, 'Call the cops. Call the cops.,'" the man said.
While the woman was pulled out, the man said the other man remained in the water. Fire officials said divers did not find anyone else in the water after about 30 minutes of searching.
It wasn't clear by 8:30 a.m. if a search would resume.
