An update on Cardinal Francis George’s health as he’s been battling kidney cancer and says there are no new medical options for him. It’s the first time Cardinal George has spoken to reporters since November when Archbishop Blasé Cupich was installed. NBC Chicago’s Mary Ann Ahern reports.
Retired Cardinal Francis George says his doctors have run out of options for his cancer treatment and he's exploring an approach to care that focuses on quality of life rather than a cure.
George spoke to reporters Friday in Chicago after the Knights of Columbus presented him with its top honor. He says his doctors have "run out of tricks in the bag."
The Archdiocese of Chicago says its retired leader has a day-to-day challenge with fatigue. His cancer has not spread to any other organs and continues to be located in the kidney. Last month, George stopped taking an experimental drug because it wasn't working.
George stepped down as the leader of Chicago's more than 2 million Roman Catholics in November. Blase Cupich became Chicago's archbishop.
