American Airlines Flight Evacuated at O'Hare Airport

Authorities met the plane after reports of a "suspicious package" that turned out to be trash, officials said

An American Airlines flight was evacuated at O'Hare International Airport on Sunday evening because of a "suspicious package" that turned out to be trash, authorities confirmed.

Flight 2601 from Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, to Chicago landed safely at O'Hare around 6:55 p.m., according to American Airlines. The 140 passengers and five crewmembers were met by authorities due to a security concern, the airline said, and passengers were bussed back to the terminal. 

The Chicago Fire Department confirmed that officials were called to O'Hare around 7:10 p.m. for reports of a suspicious package on the plane. Fire officials evacuated the passengers and upon investigation, discovered that the suspicious package was actually trash. 

All passengers were off the plane by 7:31 p.m., fire officials said.
