1. Rio Ends the 2016 Olympics with a Closing Ceremony to Remember

The first Olympics in South America will come to an end at Maracanã Stadium for the Closing Ceremony. The Mayor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, will receive the Olympic flag symbolizing the conclusion of the Rio Olympics and the start to the 2020 Summer Games.

Many details are being kept under wraps but look for five-time gymnastics medalist Simone Biles to carry the American flag at the ceremony for Team USA. Norwegian electronic musical Kygo is expected to perform. Brazilian soccer legend Pele, who had hoped to attend the Opening Ceremony before he was sidelined for ill health, could potentially make an appearance on Sunday.

How to watch: NBC will air coverage of the Closing Ceremony from 7 p.m. CT to 9:30 p.m. A one-hour special looking back at the defining moments of the game will air at 6 p.m. CT.

2. Rhythmic Gymnastics Team Falls Short of Historic Medal

The beloved team of gymnasts from North Shore Gymnastics Center had a chance at their first Olympic medal this weekend, falling short of a medal but making history anyway.

The group, which includes Alisa Kano, Natalie McGiffert, Monica Rokhman and Kristen Shaldybin, made their Olympic debut Saturday, but failed to qualify for Sunday's final round. Russia won gold in Sunday's finals with a score of 36.233.

The North Shore women were the first U.S. rhythmic gymnastics group to earn a spot in the Olympic Games.

3. Men's Basketball Stays Golden

The U.S. men’s basketball team has had to answer some tough questions about their performance in the Olympic competition. But doubts about the U.S. team were laid to rest Sunday as they prevailed in the gold medal showdown with Serbia.

The U.S. won the final game 96-66, after already defeating Serbia in a close 94-91 match earlier in the Games, and emerged not only victorious, but undefeated.

This victory marks the third straight gold medal for the U.S. men's basketball team.

4. USA's Galen Rupp Medals in Men's Olympic Marathon

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the gold medal, Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia finished second for the silver, and American Galen Rupp took bronze to become the first American-born runner to medal in the Olympics in 40 years.

Lilesa crossed his wrists high above his head at the finish line as a sign of protest against the killings and arrests that have been carried out by Ethiopia's government.

"If I go back to Ethiopia maybe they will kill me. If I am not killed maybe they will put me in prison," Lilesa said, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. "[If] they [do] not put me in prison they will block me at airport."

Guor Marial, the 32-year-old flag bearer for South Sudan competing in his second Olympics but for the first time representing his country, finished 82nd.

5. Men's Volleyball Battles Back to Claim Bronze

A little less than 48 hours removed from a shocking loss to Italy in the semifinals, the American men's volleyball team rebounded to take the bronze medal on Sunday.

The young Team USA squad bounced back from a 2-0 deficit to win the fourth set in the bronze medal match against Russia, ultimately winning the decisive fifth set.

The team includes Wheaton native Thomas Jaeschke, playing in his first Olympic games.
