10 Injured When Gun Accidentally Fires in St. Charles Club

A 69-year-old man accidentally discharged a gun in the St. Charles Sportsmen’s Club injuring at least 10 people inside the club, officials said.

The man was preparing to put his 12-gauge shotgun away inside the club, located at 44W471 Keslinger Rd. in Elburn, when he accidentally put a live shotgun round into the gun instead of a snap cap, a device used to save the firing pin of a gun while it is being store, police said.

The buckshot from the live shotgun round went into the floor and bounced up, striking several people inside the clubhouse.

A 31-year-old man from West Chicago, a 60-year-old man from Somonauk and a 14-year-old boy from Geneva were taken to Delnor Hospital after the incident along with the 69-year-old resident of St. Charles who shot the gun.

Approximately seven other people were treated at the scene and released, police said.

Police believe the incident was an accident and it does not appear that any charges will be sought in relation to the incident.
