One Person in Custody After Shooting of UPS Driver

Driver shot in back during armed robbery

One person is in custody after a United Parcel Service driver was shot and critically wounded in the Englewood neighborhood just blocks from where a police officer was shot and killed last month.

The driver was shot in the back on the 6500 block of South Hermitage Avenue about 10 a.m. Tuesday, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.

"I heard a young man laying by the truck saying, 'I'm shot. I'm shot,'" said a neighbor, Priscilla McMiller.

The driver, a UPS employee for 12 years, was shot in the back while trying to walk away from someone who was trying to rob him, officers said.

He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said.

Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.  A $1,000 reward is being offered for anyone who has information that leads to the arrest of the shooter.
