Local Concoction is GQ's “America's Choice Cocktail”

The Underground's Bombay General takes national title

The Underground operating partner Benjamin Newby shows how to make his gin concoction that’s in the running for “America‘s Choice Cocktail.”

Chicagoans don't have to go very far to sip one of the best cocktails in the country.

The Bombay General, a gin concoction created by Benjamin Newby, the operating partner of The Underground nightclub, won the GQ's "America's Choice Cocktail" contest, and will be featured in a two-page spread in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

Newby spent a couple of years perfecting the winning recipe, which also includes ingredients such as Domaine De Canton, egg whites, lemon and marmalade.

The cocktail was entered in the text-based contest based on a fifth place finish at the national Bombay Sapphire mixology competition in Las Vegas a few months ago.

"I'm really happy, and thankful for all the people who voted for me," Newby said. "It's a great honor to have a cocktail that I love so much earn so much prestige."

The winning drink is on the menu at The Underground, both Rockit Bar & Grill locations, and at Sunda restaurant.
