$2.5M Bond for Chicago Man Charged in Store Clerk's Murder

A prosecutor said the victim and his brother were trying to prevent the men from entering the store because their 3-year-old nephew was inside

Bond was set at $2.5 million Sunday for a Chicago man charged in connection with the slaying of a Bensenville store clerk last month.

Tremayne Davis, 23, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery and obstruction of justice following the Jan. 19 murder of Hussein Saghir at Sam's Tobacco and Food Mart.

He is the second man to be charged following the January incident. Kenneth Bardlett, 20, also faces first-degree murder charges and one count of attempted armed robbery.

Police say Saghir, 36, was working at the store at 235 W. Irving Park Rd. when he and his brother were confronted by two males as they were closing up for the night. Surveillance video showed the two men trying to force the brothers back into the store, and at one point one of the men pulled out a gun and shot Saghir.

A prosecutor said the victim and his brother were trying to prevent the men from entering the store because their 3-year-old nephew was inside.

While authorities said Davis and Bardlett took part, they do not believe either offender was the triggerman. Police are still searching for a third accomplice.

Officials say the surveillance video helped police catch the two, and say there is “overwhelming evidence” in the case.

Prosecutors say Davis has 14 prior arrests. His next scheduled appearance is March 17 in DuPage County.
