Buckingham Fountain Off for Season

Dive in and get a hands-on look at running the powerhouse that fuels the fountain.

The water at Chicago's iconic Buckingham Fountain has been turned off for the remainder of the season.

Originally slated to be shut down on Halloween, the Chicago Park District on Thursday said this week's storms and drop in temperature prompted crews to turn off the water early to protect its aging water pipes.

Dedicated on August 26, 1927, the fountain was built at a cost of $750,000 and has since become a favorite backdrop for tourist snap shots, wedding photographers and filmmakers.
