He would only have been able to buy certain types of full-auto rifles if he had a federal class 3 license.<br /><br />Oranges shows an ATF agent, as well as the TV reporter, firing a fully automatic miliary assault rifle, a completly different animal, and spraying the countryside with lead.<br /><br />The viewer is left with the impression that bad guys can cross state lines and buy full-auto military grade rifles whenever they desire; it's simply not true.<br /><br />The agent refers to the little round fired by the rifle as a large caliber, but it is actually puny compared to what most deer hunters carry in their semi-auto hunting rifles. The guns used by the gangs are semiautomatic replicas of the guns used in wars. <br /><br /> Second, The reporter's exaggerated firing of a fully automatic weapon was nothing short of comical. An AK has hardly any kick at all, and only an idiot or someone who watches WAY too much TV would shoot from the hip if they hope to hit anything!<br /><br />And third, The 7.62x39 rounds fired by these guns are NOT more powerful than other guns. They are actually somewhat weaker, as rifle rounds go. The ammo most widely available for these guns is called full metal jacket (FMJ), which means that every bullet has a copper shell around it. This keeps the bullet from expanding and produces a .311&quot; hole in and a .311&quot; hole out. Hunting ammo uses various types of bullets that are designed to expand on impact and cause much more damage than FMJ rounds. On top of that, 7.62x39 is not considered by shooters to be a very powerful round. It is by no means incapable of causing injury or death, but it is most definitely NOT more powerful or more deadly than other rifle ammunition. That said, rifle ammunition, as a whole, is more powerful than pistol ammunition such as 9mm or .45.<br /><br />Keep in mind that body armor is only designed to defeat pistol caliber rounds. ANY rifle round will defeat body armor, not just 7.62x39.<br /><br />It's not the type of gun or caliber of ammunition that kills people, it's the people behind the guns, the people squeezing the trigger, who are responsible for the deaths. The VAST majority of these guns live quiet, peaceful lives in collectors' safes, with the occasional trips to the range and some perforated pieces of paper being the only evidence of their power.
