It wasn't immediately clear why the group members were sick.

Nearly two dozen adults and children visiting Las Vegas for a national youth football championship came down with flu-like symptoms so serious that at least 18 people needed to be hospitalized, authorities said.

Clark County Fire Deputy Chief Erik Newman said officials were called Friday morning to help 20 adults and children, who were staying on the sixth floor of the hotel-casino.

The football team is from Santa Monica, Calif.

Deputy Chief Fernandez Leary said 18 people were taken to hospitals, including 13 children between the ages of 7 and 9.

Among those hospitalized children was Anna Maria Meyer's 10-year-old son. Meyer said her son began throwing up and having diarrhea and bad abdominal pains about 4:30 a.m. Friday.

He was taken to the hospital and doctors took blood samples, the results of which could take up to 48 hours to come back. By 10:30 p.m., Meyers said her son began throwing up again and she may bring him back to the hospital.

So far, doctors have been unable to determine what exactly is making the group members sick.

"He doesn't know what this means," Meyers said.

She added that several of her son's teammates were throwing up on the field as their peers played. The Santa Monica Vikings won the game and are now national champions, Meyers said.
