Woman Shot in Head in Gold Coast Hotel

A 22-year-old woman was found dead with a gunshot wound in a Gold Coast hotel Monday morning.

The woman was found unresponsive about 10 a.m. in a room at the Whitehall Hotel, in the 100 block of East Delaware Place, said police spokesman Jose Estrada.

The victim, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as 22-year-old Brianna Gardner of Dallas, suffered a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

A family visiting from Arizona was in the room directly above where the shooting took place and wondered if noises they heard at about 1 a.m. were connected to the crime.

"My husband, last night, was awake reading a book and he heard noises downstairs," said Valerie Brandon.

Her husband, Bob Brandon, described the noises as being similar to furniture being rearranged.

An employee of the hotel said the building does not have security cameras.
