Evanston is joining other U.S. cities that have proposed bans on plastic bags because of environmental concerns.
The City Council on Monday approved an ordinance barring stores larger than 10,000 square feet from distributing plastic shopping bags at the point of sale. Plastic bags for wrapping produce and meat inside stores will be allowed. Shoppers can bring any type of bag to a store for their own use.
The ban affects 27 businesses including supermarkets, pet shops and book stores. It takes effect Aug. 1, 2015.
Chicago approved a partial ban on plastic bags in April that also takes effect next year. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C., are also trying to limit plastic bags. Supporters of such measures say plastic bags contribute to litter and pollution.
