A dog rescued from an icy Lake Michigan harbor earlier this week has been reunited with its owner, officials said Friday.
Chicago Animal Care and Control had been caring for the dog since it was shot with a tranquilizer dart and pulled off the ice at Jackson Park Harbor on Tuesday morning.
CACC spokesman Bill McCaffrey said the dog was neutered, received a full examination that included necessary vaccines and was implanted with an identification microchip.
McCaffrey did not release the name of the owner, saying only that he was "taking steps to ensure his dog does not get loose again."
Helicopter footage showed the dog jog back toward shore several times only to head farther onto the ice. The back-and-forth went on for another agonizing half hour before crews surrounded the dog near shore. The dog laid down on the ice as police and Marine units approached while pedestrians watched nearby. Rescuers tranquilized the dog before they put a collar around him.
