Cubs' David Ross Makes History in Friday's Win Over Giants

Chicago Cubs catcher David Ross has an incredibly memorable final season with the team this year, and on Friday he had a game for the record books as the Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants.

Getting the start in Game 1 of the National League Division Series to catch for Jon Lester, Ross almost single-handedly kept the Giants’ running game in check. He threw out would-be base stealer Gorkys Hernandez in the first inning of the game, and then in the third inning he picked off a runner at first base, as Conor Gillaspie was called out on his slide back to the base.

In picking off a runner and catching a base-stealer, Ross became the first catcher to accomplish the feat in a playoff game in more than 80 years, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

In fact, the last player to do it was also a member of the Cubs, as Gabby Hartnett did it during the 1935 World Series against the Detroit Tigers.

Ross almost made the night even more memorable when he batted in the third inning of the game, but unfortunately Hernandez got his revenge, as he tracked down a deep fly ball in the left-center field gap to deny Ross an extra base hit.

Ross and the Cubs will be back on the field Saturday night as they take on the Giants in Game 2 of the NLDS, with first pitch scheduled for approximately 7:08 p.m.
