Cubs Cut Magic Number to 5 With Win Over Astros

Sunday was a great day for the Chicago Cubs in the Central Division race, as they trimmed their magic number to five with a victory over the Houston Astros.

Their victory followed a loss earlier in the day by the St. Louis Cardinals, which leaves the Cubs in position to potentially clinch a division title if they can sweep their divisional rivals in a series this week.

Early in the day, the Cardinals fell to the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 at Busch Stadium. Ryan Braun slugged a home run in the ninth inning of the game, and Tyler Thornburg earned the victory as the Brewers won on the road.

The Cubs got to play on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN, and they jumped out to an early lead over the Astros and never looked back. Addison Russell and Jorge Soler both hit home runs, and Jake Arrieta picked up the win as the Cubs took two out of three over Houston.

After the win, the Cubs now have the ability to cut even more off of their magic number as they head to St. Louis for a three-game series with the Cardinals. If the Cubs sweep the Cardinals, they will clinch their first Central Division title since 2008.
