Restaurant Security Guard Shot in Armed Robbery, Manhunt Underway

Two people got away with cash register from Kevin's Hamburger Heaven, police say

A manhunt was underway Friday morning after an armed robbery at a Bridgeport diner that left a security guard wounded.

Witnesses told NBC Chicago two people entered Kevin's Hamburger Heaven, at 554 W. Pershing Rd., and announced a robbery. At one point, one of the robbers struggled with the guard while the other robber put a gun to a waitress' head and demanded she open the cash register.

"Once I saw everything going down I basically just booked it and tried to get into the bathroom. That's when I heard the shot go off," said customer Darcell Igbo.

Customers re-emerged when the coast was clear. Police said the robbers took the entire cash register, got into a vehicle, and took off.

It wasn't immediately known how much money was in the cash register.

The security guard was was shot in the buttocks and later taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County where his condition was stabilized, police said.

No one was in custody as of 5:45 a.m., but the restaurant was reopened for business.
