The Chicago Cubs have made a big addition to their infield for the stretch run, acquiring infielder Daniel Murphy from the Washington Nationals, the team announced Tuesday. 

The Athletic and FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman were among the first outlets to report the deal as done, and the team confirmed it Tuesday afternoon. 

Murphy, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, has six home runs and 29 RBI in 205 plate appearances for the Nationals this season. He is also batting .300 and has an on-base percentage of .341 during the campaign.

In exchange, the Cubs sent minor league infielder Andruw Monasterio and a player to be named later, or cash considerations, to the Nationals. 

The 21-year-old has hit three home runs and driven in 31 RBI for the Class-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans this season, and has also stolen 10 bases in 109 games played. 

The Cubs have a glut of infielders, including Javier Baez, Ben Zobrist, and Addison Russell, but with Kris Bryant out of the lineup and the team struggling at times to score runs, Murphy would add a consistent left-handed bat to an offense in need of a boost.

The trade is one of many the Nationals are reportedly close to making, including a swap that is going to send Matt Adams to the St. Louis Cardinals.
