A 45-year-old woman was wounded when she exchanged gunfire with police in west suburban Westmont Friday afternoon.

Officers from the Westmont Police Department rseponded about 1:37 p.m. to a call of a woman with a gun at a home in the 300 block of South Lincoln Street and when they got to the scene they met with the woman in the backyard of the single family home, a release from Westment Police said.

Officers confronted the woman while she was armed with a handgun and shots were fired by both the woman and responding officers, the release said.

She was wounded and taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Police did not release details on the extent of her injuries.

None of the officers involved in the incident were injured. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have yet been filed against the woman.

The Illinois State Police will be investigating, as they do with officer-involved shootings. The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office will assist ISP with the investigation. Because of the investigation by ISP and the fact that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said, they were unable to release any additional information.

“It appears this incident is isolated to this residence and to the 45-year-old female,” Westmont Police Chief Thomas Mulhearn said. “At this time there is no threat to the community nor are we searching for any suspects related to this incident.”
