Three elderly people were injured Saturday in an escalator mishap at a store in Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg.

The escalator, located in the Nordstrom department store inside the mall, malfunctioned at 11:08 a.m. injuring three senior shoppers aboard the moving the stairs.

It is not clear what caused the 'mishap,' but one person was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Schaumburg Police Sgt. John Nebl.

Woodfield security would not comment on the incident until details on why the escalator malfunctioned are known.

The store remained open Saturday.
