1 Dead, 1 Injured in West Side Shootings

Man shot and killed while sitting in his car

One man is dead and another injured in two separate shootings on the city's West Side. The first shooting took place at 9:40 p.m. Thursday in the Douglas Park neighborhood, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Police say a gold S.U.V. drove up to 33-year-old Pedro Velez as he sat in his car with a friend. Two men got out of the vehicle and opened fire. Velez was dead on the scene.

In the Austin neighborhood, a 42-year-old man was injured in another shooting that took place about 20 minutes later. Police say the victim was involved in a fight in an alley, in the 300 block of North Lockwood Avenue. He suffered bullet wounds to the chin and wrist. The victim was transported to Mount Sanai Hospital in serious condition.

Area detectives are investigating both shootings. Police do not have any suspects in custody.
