A rare and unusual mammal born recently at Evansville's zoo is now delighting visitors to the zoo's Asian animal exhibit.
The female Sichuan takin calf was born Jan. 26 at the Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden, becoming her parent's third offspring.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports the 2-month-old animal that's now on display at the zoo's Asian Valley is described by zoo staff as "curious, yet timid."
Sichuan takins are related to goats and musk ox and live in forested valleys and mountains in China. They are considered a vulnerable species because their populations are declining in the wild, putting them at high risk of extinction.
The zoo says there are 125 takins in North America living at 22 zoos.
