Indiana University's Alpha Tau Omega Suspended Over ‘Highly Offensive' Video

Alpha Tau Omega's national office confirmed Thursday morning the suspension stemmed from a "highly offensive" video that began circulating online

Indiana University suspended fraternity Alpha Tau Omega late Wednesday pending an investigation into an alleged hazing ceremony and a related sexually-explicit video that officials say surfaced from it and began circulating online.

University spokesperson Mark Land told NBC affiliate station WTHR the hazing allegations that stemmed the suspension related to "sexual misconduct" and confirmed the decision was made after the video came to light.

Alpha Tau Omega's national office confirmed the suspension to WTHR Thursday morning, echoing that a "highly offensive" video was at a root of the suspension.

The Indianapolis Star reports that a video began circulating on Twitter that viewers say shows an ATO pledge performing a sex act on a woman as a part of a hazing ritual. The authenticity of the video being circulated has not been verified.

A university statement released Thursday morning confirmed that the school was looking into allegations that new ATO chapter members were "encouraged to perform a sex act on a female in the presence of several other chapter members" and that "there appears to be credible video evidence."

The university tweeted announced that its ATO chapter has been placed on immediate suspension Wednesday evening on Twitter.
