Chicago Man Charged With Abusing 3-Year-Old on Flight

Investigators allege Kevin Matthews touched the boy inappropriately as the boy slept

Federal prosecutors in Utah this week charged a man with sexually abusing a 3-year-old boy on a plane.

Investigators said in court documents filed Tuesday the child was seated next to Kevin C. Matthews on the flight from Chicago to San Diego with a layover in Salt Lake City.

Charging documents said the boy's mother was concerned about being seated across the aisle from her son Monday, but their family was flying standby and Matthews appeared to be friendly.

Prosecutors said other passengers saw Matthews touch the child inappropriately after the boy fell asleep and reported the groping to flight attendants, who moved the child to his mother's lap.

Matthews, 48, said he'd had "four of five glasses of wine" before and during the flight.

"Matthews explained that he was never drunk on the flight and was completely functional, aware and in control of his actions," FBI Agent Dustin Grant wrote in an affidavit used to obtain an arrest warrant, NBC station KSL in Salt Lake City reported.

Defense attorney Susanne Gustin did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
