Chicago's O'Hare International Airport ranks second in the country in terms of the number of laser events reported by the FAA in 2010.

A man and a woman were taken into custody Thursday for pointing a laser at a plane near Midway Airport, police said.

Shania Smith, 22, of the 8200 block of South Elizabeth and Elvin Slater, 24, of the 400 block of West 60th Street were each charged with two counts of discharging a laser pointer at a police officer and four counts of discharging a laser at an aircraft.

A commercial plane was passing over the vicinity of 6000 South Stewart at around 8:30 pm. when the pilot noticed a beam of light shined at the airplane. Chicago Police were notified and a helicopter was dispatched.

Several beams of lights were also shined at the helicopter, police said.

County Sheriff’s Police determined the originating location of the beam and found Smith and Slater in a car with the laser.

No one in the plane or helicopter was injured.
