TNT has given a new unscripted reality series featuring Dwayne Johnson the green light.

Tentatively titled "The Hero," the televised competition will premiere next summer with an initial eight episode run. Johnson will executive produce as well host the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter

In the series, 10 ordinary people will cohabitate and be assigned various missions that will test their strength, intelligence and moral fibre. Contestants will be pushed to the limits in order to prove what it takes to be a hero.

"'The Hero' is a great fit for TNT's drama fans, whether they enjoy stories with a lot of action, suspense and danger, or stories that offer inspiration through the heroic actions of everyday people," said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies in a statement. "We're also very excited about the extensive social-media aspect of 'The Hero,' which will engage viewers on an entirely new level and develop a strong emotional investment in the competitors and challenges."

The show will sit alongside TNT's first foray into the reality genre, "The Great Escape," which has achieved modest ratings since it began airing on Sunday June, 24 at 10 p.m. ET.

Johnson, 40, rose to fame as a professional WWE wrestler before moving into acting. His film credits include "Get Smart," "Race to Witch Mountain," "Be Cool" and "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island."
