Amidst dozens of crashes, at least 1,000 flight cancellations and schools closing, the Chicago area saw up to a foot of snow Friday and more snow is on the way this weekend.
A winter weather advisory has been issued for most of Northeast Illinois and Northwest Indiana, effective at midnight Saturday. McHenry, Lake, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, Cook, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Will, and Kankakee counties are all impacted by the advisory, as are Lake, Porter, Jasper, and Newton counties in Indiana.
The advisory will go into effect at midnight, and is scheduled to expire at 12 p.m. Sunday as possible snow and sleet accumulations of one to three inches are in the forecast.
The National Weather Service warns to take caution while driving as a mix of rain, sleet and snow is set to move into the area in the overnight hours. Periods of snow are said to cause travel difficulties as snow-covered roads and limited visibilites are expected.
Light snow came to an end across the area Saturday and forecasts show more snow will be moving in late Saturday and into Sunday morning, with temperatures dropping into the single digits and low-teens.
Predictions indicate light to moderate snow by Sunday morning with some accumulation possible by the time it comes to an end Sunday afternoon.
