Weather Channel Determines Chicago Is 6th Coldest City

Relax Chicago, despite evidence to the contrary so far this season, our chilly city is not the coldest in the country. But it's close.

According to The Weather Channel, Chicago is the sixth coldest American city.

TWC compiled 30-year average temperatures from NOAA's National Climatic Data Center during the months of December, January and February to determine its rankings among the 100 most populous cities in the country.

The data showed an average of 8-9 days per year in Chicago with subzero cold, and 127 days with subfreezing temperatures.

Chicago's record low during that period was -27 degrees on Jan. 20, 1985.

Our Wisconsin neighbors checked in with two cities in the top five coldest on the list:

  1. Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota
  2. Anchorage, Alaska
  3. Madison, Wisconsin
  4. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  5. Omaha, Nebraska
