The city of Waukegan declared a snow emergency early Sunday morning as the latest round of snow pummeled the area.
The emergency was issued after a winter weather advisory took effect Saturday through noon Sunday for portions of northwest Indiana and central, north central and northeast Illinois.
The Waukegan Police Department issued a snow ordinance that will be strictly enforced on all designated snow routes until further notice.
According to police, cars parked on snow routes will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. Motorists are asked to cooperate with the snow removal program.
"During this emergency, the Police Department also asks that motorists involved in minor traffic accidents, without injuries, to drive the vehicles involved to the Waukegan Police Department, 101 N. West Street and report the accident in person," the alert said.
The National Weather Service said snow-covered roads from the overnight heavy snow could primarily cause travel difficulties and it is best to prepare to give yourself some extra time before heading out.
Reduced visibility is expected when driving, and officials are cautioning drivers on possible slippery road conditions.
Nine consecutive days of measurable snowfall is a record, according to the National Weather Service.
