Blast of Winter Weather Hits Chicago Area

Even as snowfall begins to taper off across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, several Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect in the afternoon hours.

Currently, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for LaPorte County in northern Indiana. That warning will expire at 5 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The area could see heavy lake effect snow, with up to a foot or more possible in some locations. High winds are also in the forecast, with gusts of up to 35 mph possible.

Most of northern Illinois had been under a Winter Weather Advisory, but the advisories were allowed to expire at 2 p.m. after several inches of snow fell across the region.

A Winter Weather Advisory does remain in effect for Kankakee County in Illinois, as well as Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana, until 6 p.m. Central time.

In addition to the snowfall, high waves on Lake Michigan could cause serious issues in Illinois and Indiana. A Lakeshore Flood Advisory has been issued for Lake and Cook counties in Illinois, with waves of 8-to-10 feet expected.

Indiana could see even higher waves of up to 13 feet, according to a Lakeshore Flood Warning. Beach erosion is expected because of the waves, andresidents are being urged to stay off of piers and breakwalls.

Some localized flooding could also occur due to the high waves.
