After a calm and beautiful start to fall, rain returned to Chicago area Tuesday with a chance of severe weather on the horizon.

The day began cloudy, mild and muggy with moderate rain beginning in the far southern counties and moving north to hit the city in time for the morning rush.

Those scattered showers and storms ended relatively early, leaving an overcast sky - but the rain isn't over yet.

Tuesday afternoon was expected to be mainly cloudy, breezy, warm and humid with a chance for a pop-up storm in spots.

Late afternoon and evening is when showers and storms will become more numerous and potentially turn strong to severe, with damaging winds up to 60 mph and even isolated tornadoes possible.

Those showers and storms will end by about 12 a.m., as conditions turn cooler and less humid with clouds decreasing overnight.

Wednesday and Thursday look to be partly to mostly sunny and mild with low humidity and highs in the 60s.

A chance for showers returns Friday in the evening or at night, continuing through the weekend as a developing system moves into the area.

While the weekend forecast will be more finely tuned in the days ahead, as of Tuesday it looked to be mostly cloudy Saturday with a few showers and possibly an isolated storm, followed by an overcast, breezy and cool Sunday with another chance of rain.
