Stormy weather was threatening to bring large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes to the Chicago area late Monday afternoon and evening.

Some showers began in the early afternoon hours, with the biggest threat for severe weather beginning around 5 p.m., according to NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologists.

Storms were expected to grow more numerous - and thought to potentially become severe. Just how severe the storms become, however, depended on a warm front setting up across the area.

Though the threat for severe storms exists across the Chicago area through about 11 p.m., locations along and south of Interstate 80 are favored for more severe activity.
