Wind Chill Advisory Begins as Dangerous Cold Blasts Chicago Area

The advisory warns of wind chills at 20 or 30 below zero, though some locations could drop under 30 below zero by daybreak Friday

Dangerously cold weather descended on the Chicago area that could send wind chill values plunging to as low as 30 below zero.

With the entire Chicago area under a Wind Chill Advisory starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, residents are being urged to take extra precautions if going outside.

The advisory warns of wind chills at 20 or 30 below zero, though some locations could drop under 30 below zero by daybreak Friday. The advisory continues until noon Friday.

The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, NWS said.

Highs Thursday will sit in the upper-teens and low-20s, but wind gusts of up to 25 mph will make for single digital wind chill readings. Temperatures will fall during the late afternoon hours, plunging to near 0 degrees in the city by the overnight hours.

Friday is set to be the coldest day so far this winter. Wind chill readings will sit between -20 and -30 during the morning hours. Temperature highs will only rise into the single digits for the afternoon, but wind chill readings will remain well-below zero.

Light snow could leave behind a dusting to a half-inch of accumulation in far northern counties and up to an inch in areas south.

The weekend stays bitter with highs sitting between 6 and 12 degrees Saturday with below-zero wind chills once again.
