Chicago Weather: More Weekend Storms, Flooding Possible

    Residents in South Suburbs Cope With Flooding

    People in several south suburban communities spent Saturday dealing with floodwaters following heavy overnight rains. NBC 5’s Lauren Petty reports.

    Another bout of strong storms could hit the Chicago area late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, potentially bringing more flooding to areas already seeing high waters.

    Starting at 10 p.m., a Flash Flood Watch went into effect for Cook County and surrounding counties in Illinois, as well as parts of Northwest Indiana.

    Many spots could receive at least half an inch of additional rain, but some spots may receive one to two inches or potentially more, according to the National Weather Service. Rain rates may exceed one inch per hour.

    Strong storms hit several communities across the Chicago area on Friday night. NBC 5's Regina Waldroup reports.

    Multiple southwest suburban communities saw more than seven inches of rain overnight Friday and into Saturday. Several streets were closed as a result of flooding in suburbs including Matteson and Peotone.

    In the western suburbs, the Fox River was expected to rise near flood stage on Sunday evening.

    In addition, a Lakeshore Flood Advisory warned of potential minor flooding along Lake Michigan in Chicago, including near bike paths. Strong winds are expected to cause high waves along the shore, forecasters said.

    The Chicago area might not see relief for a while with the potential for more storms in the coming days. Significant thunderstorms are possible on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, forecasters predicted.
