A round of severe hail storms Thursday night left a path of damage in Chicago and the north suburbs, with 107,000 ComEd customers without power by midnight.
The fast-moving "supercell" storm produced golf ball-sized hail and winds in some parts of up to 90 mph, as well as downed wires, cracked trees and debris.
A fleet of police cars was damaged at Area 4 headquarters in Chicago, and overnight Metra commuters were stuck for hours because of trees on the tracks.
Friday morning, Metra trains are back on schedule and the number of homes still in the dark is down to 28,000, but traffic lights remain out from the northern region to the lake and residents woke up to find rooftop and yard damage.
Lt. John Andrews said 64 squad cars were damaged in Chicago's 11th District, including 49 cars with cracked windows and windshields. Cars are being relocated from other districts, Andrews said, while the damaged cars are repaired.
The cleanup comes a little more than a week after nearly 440,000 customers were without power from another series of severe storms.
