Morning rain and the potential for afternoon storms have canceled dozens of flights at Chicago-area airports Monday.

Heavy rain brings with it the chance for severe weather, as thunderstorms, hail, snow and possibly even a tornado are forecast across the Chicago area.

Rain showers and isolated thunderstorms moved in by early morning, making for a difficult rush hour commute.

Flight cancellations were already being reported as of 6:30 a.m., with more than 50 flights canceled at O'Hare International Airport and 40 at Midway Airport.

O'Hare Airport advised travelers to check their flight status with their airlines.

The rain was expected to move out during the mid-morning hours, with some areas seeing more than an inch of precipitation. A Flood Advisory was in effect until 9 a.m. for much of the area.

Highs are expected to climb to near 60 degrees before thunderstorms return and potentially severe weather moves in.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to re-develop by the afternoon in western Illinois, moving across northern Illinois by the early evening.

While it remains a limited risk, there is a chance conditions could bring a brief tornado or hail during the afternoon storms, particularly in areas west of the Fox River.

The rain will transition to snow overnight and into Tuesday morning as temperatures drop.

Some areas, especially those in far northern counties, could see some accumulations of an inch or more.
