Cold Temps Continue Amid Wind Chill Advisory

Wind Chill Advisory in effect for the Chicago metropolitan area until midday Friday

After climbing into the teens overnight, temperatures began falling again Friday with a Wind Chill Advisory taking effect in the NBC Chicago viewing area by the evening hours.

A Wind Chill Advisory from Friday morning was canceled, but conditions were expected to get even colder throughout the day as a second advisory took effect late Friday afternoon lasting until noon Saturday.

The advisory warns of wind chill values at -20 to -30 degrees. Some isolated locations to see wind chills dipping to -35 overnight, the National Weather Service warns.

Temperatures at 4:30 a.m. were in the single digits, though Midway International Airport checked in at 12 degrees. A brisk wind from the west ranging from 10 to 15 MPH, and gusting to 20 MPH, sent the wind chill factor into the -5 to -15 degree range.

Winter Storm Advisories and Warnings were in effect in parts of Michigan and Indiana at 4:30 a.m. as snow showers continued to fall there.

Cloud cover varied throughout Chicagoland early Friday but the region was precipitation free aside from a random flurry.

The morning Wind Chill Advisory replaced a Winter Weather Advisory that expired at 3 a.m. Snow began falling in the far north and western portions of the metro area midday Thursday, reaching the rest of the area by the afternoon with temperatures climbing into the single digits.

The advisory warned of anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of snow possible by the evening hours Thursday with winds causing significant blowing and drifting snow that could make for dangerous travel conditions.

Just before 4 p.m. the Federal Aviation Administration reported a ground stop at O'Hare International Airport and Midway Airport citing gate issues and windy weather. The stop caused some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 2 hours and 20 minutes at O'Hare Airport.

By noon, snow and blowing snow was reported in the far northwest suburbs, with visibility reduced to a half-mile in Rockford, according to the National Weather Service. Hazardous conditions were also reported across the area throughout the afternoon.

O'Hare Airport reported nearly 370 flights were canceled as of 3:40 p.m. and more than 50 flights were canceled at Midway Airport.
