Just days after Chicagoans saw near 80-degree temperatures in October, area residents could soon get their first glimpse of snowflakes of the season.
Tuesday saw a major drop in temperatures, with highs dipping into the 40s, but as the night goes on, things will get even colder.
Temperatures are expected to fall into the low- to mid-30s in the evening hours and overnight.
Early Wednesday morning could see some scattered rain showers, bringing the potential for snowflakes to fall as morning temps sit in the 30s.
Breezy conditions are expected to keep temperatures from falling below freezing, however, and highs for the day are set to reach into the upper-40s and low-50s.
Colder temps return again Friday evening as lows are expected to dip into the 30s once more, bringing the potential for the Chicago area’s first frost or freeze of the season.
Saturday highs are expected to sit in the mid-40s with overnight lows in the 30s again and frost or freeze conditions still possible.

Chicago typically sees its first freeze between Oct. 21 and Oct. 30, according to the National Weather Service. Many suburbs average their first fall freeze before Oct. 20, however. Some far northwest suburbs, on average, see their first freeze before Oct. 10.
