Major Wacker Drive Intersection Reopens

Full completion of $300 million project expected by end of November

Loop motorists were rejoicing in their driver's seats Thursday afternoon.

Chicago Department of Transportation officials reopened the intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Wacker Drive after it was shut down earlier this year for construction.

The reopening means 11 CTA routes will be partially or fully restored to their original routing, according to CDOT. (Click here to view affected routes.)

Commuters can also expect better traffic flow around Union Station. CDOT officials restored the southbound "contra-flow" lane for CTA buses on the west side of Canal Street. The #1 Indiana/Hyde Park, #X28 Stony Island Express and #151 Sheridan will return to their original routes on November 19th.

Thursday marks the first of three stages toward the full reopening of Lower and Upper Wacker at the end of the month. The Wacker-Van Buren Street intersection open on Nov. 30, and traffic to Lower and Upper Wacker will be restored at the Congress Parkway interchange, Interstate 290 and Harrison Street.

Franklin Street will be converted back to a northbound one-way street from Van Buren to Lake Street during the first of December.

The $300 million Wacker Drive project kicked off in May 2010.
