Fatal Wrong-Way Crash Closes Portion of Lake Shore Drive

Chicago police early Monday morning closed a portion of Lake Shore Drive after a fatal, one-way crash involving three vehicles.

Authorities said a driver was heading south in the northbound lanes of the 3900 block of South Lake Shore Drive about 2:40 a.m. when his car struck two other vehicles.

The driver, identified as 27-year-old Jose Quintuna, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and fire officials.

Four people were in the vehicle that was hit head-on, officials said. Two were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and two others were taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

Daryl Reid Jr. was driving the vehicle that was hit head-on. His father, Daryl Reid, said his son broke both of his knees in the crash.

"He's still here with us," said Daryl Reid. "Head on collision? Could've been worse."

Two women who were in the other vehicle that was clipped by the wrong-way drive refused medical treatment.

The northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive were closed between 39th and 47th streets until about 6:45 a.m. Some drivers apparently frustrated by the slow down were seen driving on the lakefront trail adjacent to Lake Shore Drive. Northbound #J14 Jeffery Jump buses were temporarily rerouted in the area.
