1 Dead in Fiery Crash on I-394

In a tragic start to the Labor Day weekend, one person was killed Friday after a fiery crash on Interstate 394 in far south suburban Lynwood.

A flat-bed tractor trailer that was traveling northbound on the Interstate crossed the median and struck an SUV that was heading southbound.

The SUV burst into flames and one person, identified as 49-year-old Mary Lacy, of Lynwood, was killed. Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Lacy was the sole occupant in the vehicle.

From the sky, NBC Chicago's helicopter could see a blue tarp covering the driver's side of the charred SUV.

The front end of the tractor-trailer was almost completely sheared off, but the driver was not injured.

A trooper said the driver was from Valparaiso, Ind., but couldn't say if he'd been taken into custody or charged with any traffic violations.

That stretch of the Interstate was closed for several hours, with traffic detoured at Interstate 88 to the north and at Glenwood-Dyer Road to the south.
