How Safe is That Bus?

Transit authority claims all buses in service are OK

The mechanics' union for the CTA bus system is claiming that there have been too many cutbacks and that leaves the city's bus fleet unsafe.

"There's not enough people to do the job," Dan Hrycyk, an officer for the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 241, told the Sun-Times on Wednesday.

The CTA has cut 29 percent of it's mechanics in the last 13 years.

The transit authority says it can get by with fewer mechanics because newer buses break down less often and because they are more focused on prevention.

The CTA also says all the buses on the roads are safe.
